Meet Krista Harmon
30+ years of experience helping thousands of students and adults discover meaningful career paths
My StoryFrom an early age, I found myself wondering what makes each of us unique.
I’ve always been fascinated by people. Why do some thrive in certain environments while others don't? Why does one person love solving complex problems while another finds joy in serving others? I came to believe that every person has been uniquely designed with strengths, interests, values, and gifts that can lead them toward meaningful work.
That curiosity became the foundation of my career.
Each of us has a unique purpose.Early in my career, I worked at a nonprofit career center where I had the privilege of helping women from all walks of life navigate career transitions. Through personality, values, and interest assessments, I watched people discover things about themselves they had never recognized before. No two individuals were alike, and I loved helping each person uncover the unique combination of qualities that made them who they are.
I also believe that each of us has a unique purpose. While people express that purpose in different ways, I have always been inspired by the idea that our individual design—our personalities, talents, interests, values, and life experiences—is not accidental. When we better understand ourselves, we're better equipped to pursue work that is meaningful and fulfilling.
I love watching the "light bulb" moments happen. In 2012, my career took me into the world of education, where I began working with high school students. It didn't take long to notice a troubling pattern. Students were expected to choose careers, college majors, and postsecondary pathways before they had ever been given the opportunity to truly understand themselves.
I loved watching the "light bulb" moments happen. As students explored their personalities, strengths, interests, and values, they began to see themselves differently. Suddenly, careers that once seemed random started to make sense. They understood why some careers energized them while others didn't. More importantly, they gained confidence because they could finally explain what made them unique.
Those experiences inspired me to start Discovery Careers.
I realized there was a real need for personalized career guidance that schools often didn't have the time or resources to provide. I wanted to create a place where students and adults could slow down, reflect, ask questions, and discover careers that genuinely fit who they are.
Today, helping people discover that fit is still my favorite part of the work.Every Discovery Session is different because every person is different. Whether I'm working with a high school student choosing a career path, a college student questioning a major, or an adult considering a career change, my goal is always the same: to help each person understand themselves more deeply and leave with greater confidence, clarity, and excitement about what's next.
There is nothing more rewarding than seeing someone leave a session with a renewed sense of direction and the confidence to take the next step. Those moments are why I continue to love this work after more than three decades.
My Career Development PhilosophyWho you are matters.
Before you can determine where you’re going, it helps to understand where you’re starting.
There isn’t one right answer.
Your career isn’t a multiple-choice question. There are many ways your unique design can meet the needs of the world.
You don’t need someone to tell you what to do.
You need space to discover what you already know—and guidance to see what's possible.
You don’t have to have it all figured out.
Career exploration isn't about having all the answers. It's about being curious enough to ask questions, explore possibilities, and discover something new about yourself along the way.
Self-awareness changes everything.
The better you understand what energizes, motivates, and matters to you, the more confidently you can make decisions.
Your career will change. You will change.
That's not a problem to solve. It's part of the journey!
